Island hopping with your cat: what you need to know
Tips to keep your cat comfortable.
Carrier
Choose a hard-sided carrier with good ventilation. Add a familiar blanket or a piece of your clothing so it smells like home.
Before the trip
- Get your cat used to the carrier 1–2 weeks ahead. - Ask your vet about calming pheromones (Feliway). - Don't feed 3–4 hours before to avoid nausea.
On the ferry
Most operators require cats to stay in the carrier. A pet cabin is the best option on long routes.
On the island
- Keep your cat indoors for the first 2–3 days to acclimate. - Confirm your accommodation accepts cats (many only accept dogs). - Keep a vet's contact handy.
Documents
Same as dogs: EU passport, microchip, rabies vaccine.
